Also: Is United Airlines premium economy worth it to Europe? June 14, 2023 [THE POINTS GUY]( [View in browser]( [TPG Daily NEWSLETTER]( [THE POINTS GUY]( TRAVEL INFLATION TAKES A BREATHER by Cameron Sperance, Senior Hotels Reporter [TPG | Hero Image] Good day, TPG readers. I’m here to bring you some good news with respect to how much your next vacation will cost! Alas, don’t get too excited. While economists debate whether there’s a recession on the horizon or not (or if it will be a “hard landing” or a “soft landing”), there’s general consensus that the travel sector is going to sidestep any major head winds. While [that doesn’t mean a massive wave of travel deals is on the way]( the latest inflation numbers signal a slowdown in the price hikes that gripped U.S. travel over the last 18 months or so. Airline fares are down a little more than 13% from a year ago, according to the U.S. Consumer Price Index data released Tuesday. Hotel rates are still up nearly 4% from a year ago, but even this is a win: Hotel rates were a leading cause of inflation last year and were up nearly 26% from the year prior. The data suggests prices are finally stabilizing. While that doesn’t necessarily mean bargains, there are also reports out there showing U.S. leisure beach destinations like Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and the Gulf Coast are beginning to cool along with Sun Belt areas as travelers can now visit Europe and other international destinations previously restricted during the pandemic. So maybe now is the time to finally start thinking about that beach trip after several years of prices being in the stratosphere.
