Also: I woke up and booked the cheapest same-day flight to anywhere — here's what happened. May 25th 2023 [THE POINTS GUY]( [View in browser]( [TPG Daily Newsletter]( together with [Partner Logo]( [THE POINTS GUY]( together with [Partner Logo]( IT’S MORE THAN SIMPLE MATH by Tarah Chieffi, Travel News Reporter [TPG | Hero Image] When I started getting into points and miles, I was always very stressed about maximizing redemptions. I would spend an excessive amount of time poring over flight schedules and hotel options, [calculating redemptions to make sure I had gotten the best value](. Now that I’ve been at it a bit longer, I don't look at points and miles redemptions as black and white. Yes, it is still important to me to start by calculating the value of my points and miles based on [TPG’s monthly valuations]( and trying to find a redemption with a higher value than if I had paid cash for the same flight or hotel, but I also look at other factors: Is this something that I would never pay cash for? I would have a hard time parting with thousands of dollars for a business-class flight, but it’s easier for me to part with my miles because it won’t send my bank account into the negative. Are the cash rates higher than I prefer? I recently traveled over Easter weekend, and the hotel rates were astronomical. My dates weren’t flexible, so I was happy to throw some hotel points at the problem. Does the redemption make me feel happy? Whether I am getting a value of 5 cents per mile or 2, if the redemption makes me feel excited about the trip I am planning, I consider that a good value. Of course, it all starts with redemption education (and hopefully ends with a smile).
