Also: A new way to save money on gas this summer May 24, 2023 [THE POINTS GUY]( [View in browser]( [TPG Daily NEWSLETTER]( [THE POINTS GUY]( THE BEST US AIRLINES OF 2023 by Nick Ewen, Director of Content [TPG | Hero Image] Memorial Day nears, and all signs point to [a very busy holiday weekend](. Even if the weather cooperates, the sheer number of passengers in the sky could mean headaches with rebooking if things go wrong on your flight. Is one airline more likely to get you where you need to be in relative comfort? According to us here at TPG, yes. Today, we released our [annual report on the best U.S. airlines]( using extensive Department of Transportation data along with published airline policies and real-time award availability to rank the 10 largest airlines. For the fifth year, Delta Air Lines took the top spot, performing well across the board, only scoring poorly in our affordability metric. United Airlines took second, Alaska Airlines was third, and American Airlines took fourth. Southwest Airlines experienced the biggest drop compared to [last year’s results]( falling from second to fifth in this year’s report thanks to lower operational performance (largely due to its [holiday meltdown](. Frontier Airlines ranked last, with high numbers of involuntary bumps and customer complaints to the DOT. In fact, Frontier scored nearly 10 points lower than the ninth-place finisher (Allegiant Air). Beyond the individual rankings, the overall data revealed startling trends in year-over-year performance. Customer complaints rose 87.6%, while involuntary bumps jumped 87.45%. The data also showed increases in cancellations (up 54%) and mishandled baggage (up 25%). The most frustrating part? This came with higher costs for consumers. When you combine all 10 airlines, the price of flying a single passenger 1,000 miles rose 22.67%. Check out our [best U.S. airlines of 2023]( report for complete data analysis.
