Also: Travel for all: 7 autism-friendly vacation destinations [The Points Guy]( WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY Apr 3, 2023 THE SURPRISING REASON BEHIND HIGH HOTEL RATES We’re keeping busy perusing potential vacations for April. But it’s also never too early to start thinking about summer travel, too. Perhaps do a little light meditation before you go to book, as hotel rates are only going up. [Yes, even in this economy](. You might be asking yourself, how are hotel rates so expensive when there’s so much uncertainty in the economy? Simply put, it all comes down to supply and demand. Many hotel owners decided to shut down during the pandemic, and that took a lot of hotel rooms out of the market. But demand for travel roared back a lot faster than expected. U.S. hotel rates were 7% higher than a year ago last week, and luxury hotels performed almost 14% better than before the pandemic, according to STR. That means buckle up, readers: It’s almost certain to be [an expensive summer of travel ahead](.
