Also: Newark's new Terminal A set to open [The Points Guy]( WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY Jan 6, 2023 CREDIT CARDS: TO KEEP OR CANCEL Hi from Senitra Horbrook, TPG’s credit cards editor. This is my first contribution to the daily newsletter and I look forward to sharing my expertise with you over the coming months. The arrival of the new year brought my first annual fee, due this week for [The Platinum Card® from American Express](. This caused me to ask myself: Should I keep or cancel the card? If you’re on the fence about keeping a credit card, you can reach out to the issuer for options. You may be offered the opportunity to downgrade your card to one with a lower or no annual fee. The issuer may also have a retention offer, such as a statement credit or bonus points, to entice you to keep the card for another year. I’ve had my Platinum card since late 2020 and received a retention offer last year. The Amex Platinum has a hefty annual fee of $695 ([see rates and fees]( and I also have both the American Express Platinum Card for Schwab and Business Platinum Card® from American Express]( so canceling this card would not create a big hole in my card portfolio. Still, it’s been nice having double (or even triple) perks, such as the statement credits for airline incidental fees, digital entertainment, Uber and Saks Fifth Avenue. (Enrollment is required for select benefits.) The information for the Schwab Platinum has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. I contacted Amex by chat to inquire about a retention offer, but I was told there were no offers available for me. So I decided to cancel my card.
