Also: Airbnb's new transparent pricing [The Points Guy]( WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY Nov 7, 2022 SPONSORED BY [TPG] IT’S A GOOD TIME TO OWN A HOTEL. TO BE A GUEST? NOT SO MUCH Hello, TPG readers, and a happy Monday to each of you. It’s the start of a new week and a winding down of hotel earnings season. That faint sound of giggling and high-fives isn’t just in your head: In recent weeks, the chief executives of all major hotel companies appeared positively giddy about how much people are willing to pay for a hotel room. Marriott and Hyatt were the latest to report earnings late last week. [Marriott was the profitable giant]( with a $630 million profit, while Hyatt posted a $28 million profit (Hyatt owns more of its hotels, so that usually keeps its profits lower than its more asset-light peers like Marriott and Hilton). These numbers follow news that [Hilton nabbed a $346 million profit]( late last month. If your travel wallet is feeling lighter than usual, it may be because more of your hard-earned cash is going to hotel companies. Marriott noted its global room rates averaged 10% higher between July and September compared to the same time in 2019, with rates for the U.S. and Canada 15% higher. Don’t expect much of a reprieve, either. Hilton CEO Chris Nassetta noted in the company’s earnings call in late October that there likely won’t be many discounts in coming months due to business travel and group demand coming back to life, even in the face of a possible recession.
