Also: Closing the gap on United 1K elite status [The Points Guy]( WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY Oct 31, 2022 THE MOST FRIGHTENING THING IN TRAVEL: HIGH COSTS Boo! Happy Halloween, everyone. Want to know what keeps me up at night? It isn’t a fear of vampires or monsters lurking under the bed. It’s how scary it is to make a reservation for any kind of travel these days. I’ve looked into booking a fall or winter weekend trip here and there. Let’s just say that based on my research, spending about $400 a night is the new normal in the hotel orbit. As if that wasn’t bad enough, even previously affordable domestic trips, such as the one I'm taking to southern Alabama to see my mom the week before Thanksgiving (when prices normally are not that bad), are more expensive than international airfare to Europe. Don’t expect any bargains to emerge anytime soon. Hilton CEO Chris Nassetta said on an investor call last week that he still felt the company had the [ability to charge more for hotel rooms]( because consumers have a lot of excess savings from the pandemic (thus, we all have the ability to pay more for a hotel room). He also noted that international and group business travel demand is only just beginning to revive. Executives at Paris-based Accor, the company behind brands like Fairmont and Sofitel, noted room rates were 23% higher over the last three months than they were during the same time frame in 2019. Accor’s chief financial officer later noted that he doesn't expect things will slow down as we approach the end of the year. It may be tough for us (and our wallets) to accept, but there are some strategies you can consider to help soften the blow.
