Also: Heathrow pays respect to the queen [The Points Guy]( WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY Sep 17, 2022 CASHING IN A DECADE’S WORTH OF POINTS Hi, y’all! I’m back for a weekend turn at the helm of TPG’s newsletters, and I must make a confession: Six months into the job here at TPG, and I’ve caught the bug — the mileage bug, that is. My loyalty and points strategy made zero sense prior to this year, just accumulating points and not really knowing the best way to redeem them. You might say the last six months have been just as much an education as they have been about reporting hotel news. My husband (some of you may remember him as the one I [ditched in Delta economy]( a few months ago to selfishly accept an upgrade) and I got married in late 2019. But the pandemic a few months later pushed out our planned honeymoon by a few years. You might say it was a stroke of luck that I started working at TPG when it finally came time to map out our strategy. A few sessions with [Katie Genter]( taught me the biggest lesson when cashing in points for a megatrip like this: Be flexible. Therefore, instead of flying from Boston to Vietnam, we are heading to Frankfurt for a few days and then hopping on Vietnam Airlines for a pretty incredible points redemption (for us, anyway) considering the holiday travel season — 90,000 points apiece for business class compared to the 300,000-plus points needed to go straight from the U.S. It might not be the best redemption to some experts around here, but we’re feeling pretty good about just having something on the books after all this time. Plus, who doesn't love a reason to check out [Christmas markets in Germany]( Have you made any incredible redemptions lately for a long-awaited trip? I’d love to hear! Hit me up at [cameron.sperance@thepointsguy.com](mailto:Cameron.sperance@thepointsguy.com) or follow me on [Twitter]( and [Instagram]( to swap stories over there.
