Also: An adventure in Ghana [The Points Guy]( WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY Jul 22, 2022 SPONSORED BY [TPG] HOW MUCH HIGHER CAN HOTEL PRICES GO? While there's no denying that we're in the dog days of summer right now, it has also become quite clear that we're in the midst of a golden era for U.S. hotel owners. It’s hard to describe just how [extraordinary the comeback]( has been for an industry that languished for months because of record-low demand during the early months of the pandemic. Today, it’s an industry commanding higher-than-high daily rates for guest rooms. U.S. hotel performance last week was 6.4% higher than it was during the same time in 2019, according to hotel data firm STR. Demand continues to [roar ahead]( thanks to leisure travelers, but even group and business travel are [seeing a revival](. The next litmus test for the hotel industry will come in the next few weeks when all the major hotel companies (Marriott International, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, IHG Hotels & Resorts and Hyatt Hotels Corporation) report second-quarter and midyear earnings. Everyone (including yours truly) is going to be looking for any signs of a slowdown when all the hotel CEOs get to talking during their various earnings calls. People are fed up with paying exorbitant rates on hotel rooms that don’t have services to match the cost. Prices soared at the gas pump, so will that affect how well certain hotels performed? What about rising COVID-19 case numbers heading into fall — is the long-awaited return of booming business travel nudged out even further? There’s a lot to think about for the next phase of travel’s recovery, but we're here to cover it every step of the way.
