[THE POINTS GUY]( [View in browser]( [TPG Daily NEWSLETTER]( [THE POINTS GUY]( More value despite the higher fee
by Sean Cudahy, Aviation Reporter
[TPG | Hero Image] Like a lot of people who carry the [American Express® Gold Card]( I wasnât thrilled to see the cardâs annual fee recently hiked by $75, from $250 to $325 (see [rates and fees](. But make no mistake: This card is keeping its prominent place in my wallet. The [Amex Gold is my big points earner]( thanks to its unmatched (in my opinion) rewards for restaurant and U.S. supermarket purchases. Plus, the tweaks Amex made to the cardâs suite of benefits [as part of this recent refresh]( will either: a) Help me get more value out of the card, or b) Not affect me whatsoever. Letâs start with the latter. I was momentarily worried to see Amex capped the cardâs [illustrious earning rate of 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent at restaurants]( at $50,000 annually (youâd then earn 1 point per dollar). However, a quick check of my Amex app revealed Iâve spent around $10,000 to date at restaurants â meaning thereâs no way Iâd come close to hitting that limit. Amex also added an up-to-$50 semiannual [statement credit for dining at Resy restaurants]( in the U.S. Could it be simpler to use? Sure. Will I make use of it â and more than offset the annual fee increase in the process? Absolutely. Plus, the up-to-$7 monthly [statement credit on Dunkinâ purchases]( in the U.S. is, for me, a highly useful perk. And enrolling for both of these credits is super easy. Donât carry the Amex Gold yet? Hereâs another reason to consider it: Right now, new cardmembers can earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $6,000 on the card in the first six months of membership â plus 20% back (up to $100) in statement credits on eligible restaurant purchases during the first six months. Thatâs worth $1,300, according to TPGâs August 2024 [valuations](. - [New Amex Gold offer worth up to $1,300](
