Also: American Airlines adds new SoCal destination July 24, 2024 [THE POINTS GUY]( [View in browser]( [TPG Daily NEWSLETTER]( [THE POINTS GUY]( Delta's meltdown: Your rights as a passenger by Sean Cudahy, Aviation Reporter [TPG | Hero Image] It’s been a rough several days at airports, particularly if you’ve had travel booked on Delta Air Lines. An IT glitch Friday affected many airlines — but Delta’s had a hard time recovering, with continued disruptions over the last five days fueling [more than 5,000 cancellations]( on an airline normally known for its reliability. The good news is, things look to be getting back on track, and Delta says operations should be normal by tomorrow. If you’ve found yourself stranded, keep your receipts! The U.S. Department of Transportation says Delta is on the hook to pay for eligible passengers’ meals, hotels and ground transportation. Still have a flight upcoming? Know your rights — including the [refund policy](. If your flight is canceled or significantly delayed and you choose not to travel, you’re entitled to a full refund for the unused portion of your ticket. That can also come in handy if you decide to go ahead and book a flight on another airline. If I had a flight booked on Delta for the coming days, I would be making a refundable backup reservation (this is when points and miles come in handy). Consider this: Around 30% of Delta flights since Friday have been canceled, even as the airline says it’s working “around the clock” to fix the lingering problems. And don’t forget about that [credit card with travel insurance protection]( that might already be in your wallet. For instance, the [Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card]( includes trip delay reimbursement of up to $500 per ticket for reasonable expenses when your trip is delayed for more than 12 hours or overnight. Different cards carry different types and levels of protection, so check out our guide to determine [whether you qualify for trip protection coverage and how to file for reimbursement](. If you don't have a card that provides these benefits, it might be time to [add one to your wallet](.
