[TPG | Hero Image] During my time at TPG, itâs been ingrained in me that it doesnât usually make sense to [buy points and miles](. [TPGâs valuations]( usually show that the price per point or mile is not worth the cost. But as with most things in life, thereâs an exception to every rule. Through Friday, Air Canada's loyalty program [Aeroplan is offering up to a 100% bonus on points purchases](. Your bonus depends on how many points you purchase. Typically, [Aeroplan]( points cost about 2.58 cents each, but during the promotion, the per-point cost drops to 1.29 cents. TPG values Aeroplan points at 1.5 cents each, so you can save money by purchasing points during this promotion and redeeming them for your next trip. For example, you need just 60,000 Aeroplan points to fly business class from New York to European destinations like Zurich, Geneva and Frankfurt this summer. If you purchase 60,000 points for about $1,540 to receive the 100% bonus, youâll receive 120,000 points total â more than enough to cover your business-class flight to Europe for potentially thousands less than youâd pay in cash. Based on your dates and routes, 120,000 points could be enough to cover your return flight, too. Keep in mind that you will still be responsible for any taxes and fees. Aeroplanâs current promotion is just one example of when it makes sense to buy points. Next time your preferred airline or [hotel brand]( is offering a bonus on points purchases, take a few minutes to determine whether youâll come out ahead by buying points versus paying cash.
