[THE POINTS GUY]( [View in browser]( [TPG Daily NEWSLETTER]( [THE POINTS GUY]( Americans can now renew their passport online
by Caroline Tanner, News Reporter
[TPG | Hero Image] As we head into July, my birthday month, one travel-related item on your to-do list should be checking your passport expiration date. If your passport is set to expire, you might be eligible to [renew your passport]( via the U.S. Department of Stateâs [online passport renewal system]( which just reopened last week. Applications open at 1 p.m. Eastern time daily, on a first-come, first-served basis. If you arenât able to start your application that day, keep checking back to see if a slot opens up. The agency will âgraduallyâ begin opening the portal to more people over time. Currently, Americans should expect six to eight weeks for routine service and two to three weeks for expedited service, online or by mail. To renew online, you must meet [specific qualifications]( including being at least 25 years old with a passport issued between 2009 and 2015. Your passport must also be set to expire within one year to renew online. But regardless of the renewal method, travelers should renew their passport a minimum of six months in advance since [most countries require passports to be valid for six months]( at the time of entry. Today is my last day on the newsletter for now, but before I go, I leave you with my favorite passport story Iâve ever written: [How to avoid a 7-week passport renewal saga](. As I head out on my birthday trip and beyond, feel free to [follow along]( on Instagram for the inevitable travel drama that seems to ensue. I am a Leo, after all.
