In every story, tale or movie about Pirates, they're always in search of lost treasure and they always have eyepatches. I always assumed the eyepatch covered some sort of injury, or a missing eye -- being as Pirates were constantly around swords, combat, etc. Make sure to read this week's Fog Cutter to discover what the real reasons for eyepatches were! --P S&P 500 Sets New Record 💸 Whether you're celebrating or mourning the win of the Chiefs yesterday, Wall Street is still celebrating the record close of the S&P 500 index which surged above 5,000 for the first time ever. If the index holds above this level, it's a psychological threshold that can symbolize the market's strength in Q1. You may have also seen the headline... "14 out of the last 15 weeks the markets have notched gains". Pretty impressive. Preston likes to say, "Do you know when a stock is done going up? It starts going down." We usually get a slight chuckle from people when we say that, but until we start seeing the market drop or start trying to break from this uptrend, we will continue to ride the wave. Yes... everything feels extended to the upside, and some profit taking at some point is still to be expected, but we will analyze that once we start to see it happen. To wrap up, inflation data is going to be released this week and the market may be looking for a reason to take some profits... so be mindful of the CPI report coming out Wednesday and PPI being released Friday. Historians have learned some interesting perspectives, mainly that pirates wore eye patches to enhance their night vision! If you think about it, there's a stark contrast from a sun drenched day above deck (not to mention the sun also reflecting off the water), compared to the dark environs below deck. Life at sea: Pirates had to know how to navigate every inch of their vessels, keeping in mind that below deck it was windowless and crowded. And for fast decisions, they had to act quickly! By wearing a patch over one eye, pirates could "trick" their vision, allowing them to adjust to darkness instantly. (They did so by switching the patch to the other eye, or simply lifting it up). Normally, it takes from 10 to 30 minutes for the human eye to completely adjust/see in the darkness. However, by wearing a patch over one eye, the covered eye was instantly ready for whatever the Pirate needed to see in the dark! Avast me hearties, now you know! I hope you enjoyed this edition of "The Fogcutter". You can expect this in your inbox every Monday moving forward.
