When the market lets the good times roll, they roll indeed. Session after session seems to be going swimmingly for equities. But as any seasoned swimmer knows, it's what lies beneath that should concern us. In this case, it's whales. Today saw a massive upside call spread on the VIX "fear index." At approximately 11:20 AM ET, a trader executed a bold move: buying 50,000 September 25 calls and selling the September 45 calls against them. This trade in total cost them $1.85 million…And if they nail it perfectly, they could stand to make $98.1 million. Of course, it’s highly unlikely given where the VIX is and the trade only has 71 days till it expires. In all likelihood it's probably a hedge of sorts.
