July 28, 2023 Echoes of the Past: Interest Rates at Highest Level Since 2001 If we take a look back

July 28, 2023 Echoes of the Past: Interest Rates at Highest Level Since 2001 If we take a look back into our recent history, the last instance we observed interest rates of this magnitude was when President George W. Bush had newly assumed his presidential duties, and the MP3 player was the dominant technological innovation. Only yesterday, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Mr. Jerome Powell, declared a further escalation of a quarter-point to moderate the increasing inflation, thus elevating interest rates into the bracket of 5.25%–5.50%, a threshold unseen since the commencement of the year 2001. This brings us to the 11th augmentation of the rate since March 2022, a time when interest rates were escalated from a point near nonexistence. Yet, the Federal Reserve may not have concluded its course of action: Mr. Powell intimated that another ascension of the rate remains under consideration for the latter part of this year. In Pursuit of the Optimal Control of Inflation Whether we are to anticipate another escalation soon hinges upon the events that unfold from now until the Federal Reserve's forthcoming meeting in September. If consumer prices descend further than they already have a result of prior rate escalations. They say that the harshest phase may be behind us. But, if you believe that you're not paying attention. They are telling us that $1 in 2020 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $1.18 today, an increase of $0.18 over 3 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 5.64% per year between 2020 and today. Ummm, who is smoking what over there? Let's look at the numbers... - The average home in 2020 was $300,000. Today it's over $430,000. - The average car in 2020 was $36,000. Today it's over $47,000 - The average gas price in 2020 was $1.84. Today it's over $3.97. We have not mentioned groceries, restaurants, insurance, car repair, etc. Does any of this feel like 5% inflation to you? Nevertheless, the Federal Reserve will seek more intervention. It's the only card they have to play. America's day of reckoning is coming. We are going to have to answer for our reckless money policies and we will pay the price very soon. Peering into the Future... if consumer prices do not persist in a "durably down" state over the upcoming couple of months, Mr. Powell proclaimed it's "certainly possible" that a 12th rate enhancement might be the magic touch, while all keenly observe, holding their collective breath, to discern whether the Federal Reserve can address inflation without inciting a recession, but we already know the answer to that. Are you awake yet? Understanding the Role of Gold and Silver in the Crypto Community In the world of cryptocurrencies, the debate over the significance of gold and silver as valuable assets is a subject of great interest. As an expert in the field, I have been invited to share insights on the place of these precious metals within the crypto community. Gold-backed stablecoins, a unique concept that ties the value of cryptocurrencies to the price of gold, have gained attention for their potential to provide stability in a highly volatile financial landscape. A Sound Money System for Fairness and Equality Throughout my 40+ years of experience, I firmly believe that a sound money system is one that promotes equality among individuals, from the wealthiest to the most disadvantaged. When one receives compensation for their labor or intellectual property in the form of gold or silver, it fosters a fair and just system. While not without imperfections, history has shown that gold has consistently maintained its value, making it a trusted form of money over time. Mainstream Media's Misconceptions about Precious Metals However, mainstream financial media often portrays precious metals in a negative light. The reason behind this bias is that when people invest in gold or silver, they tend to hold onto their assets, resembling a savings account. This behavior reduces the fees generated for financial institutions compared to the frequent trading associated with traditional investments. Despite pundits occasionally highlighting short-term outperformance of stocks or bonds, gold's enduring value has prevailed as a recognized form of money throughout history.
