Getting Your Pillow Should not be a pain in the neck.  It’s Important to Understand Your Pill

Getting Your Pillow Should not be a pain in the neck.  It’s Important to Understand Your Pillow In and Out [Getting Your Pillow Should not be a pain in the neck] In Part 1 we went over which pillow is best for the position you sleep in. But, is your pillow designed to be moisture-wicking? Does it have customizable support in case you sleep in multiple positions? How does your mattress effect which pillow you get? What if you have sensitive skin? In Part 2 we will answer all these questions and more so that you know the factors to look for when getting the perfect pillow for whatever sleep position you prefer. Do You Sleep Hot or Cool? If you tend to get sweaty while you sleep, you'll want a pillow that breathes and dissipates heat. In our tests, pillows made with polyester fibers tend to stay cool better than ones made of solid foam. And don't fall for pillows with a "cool" gel layer: Though they might initially give you a feeling of coolness, of the pillows we test we find that this feature can trap heat and moisture. Moisture-Wicking The average adult loses 2 cups of moisture throughout the night during sleep, from perspiration to watering eyes and through the nose. Moisture-wicking fabrics are fabrics with the ability to pull moisture away from the skin using tiny, built-in capillaries. Moisture is drawn to the exterior of the fabric, which makes it easier to evaporate and helps keep the body dry. Note, just because a pillow is designed to be cooling doesn’t necessarily mean it’s designed to be moisture-wicking, too. So, if you’re going through menopause or prone to night sweats, it’s best to aim for fabrics that are naturally absorbent. Polyester, Tencel, and bamboo are all great examples of materials that aren’t designed to feel cool to the touch… but will wick away moisture while you sleep.  Customizable Support Bedding brands are increasingly designing pillows that sleepers can customize to meet their specific needs. Some pillows feature a removable middle insert, which allows you to experiment with loft and firmness. Additionally, many pillows offer adjustable fills, meaning you can unzip the cover fabric and manipulate the internal stuffing until you’ve found the feel and support that works best for your body. This is particularly helpful for combination sleepers, or folks who are still figuring out what their perfect sleep style is. The Mattress You Have The mattress is a whole other beast that we will go into in another email, but here are the basics in regards to choosing the right pillow for the mattress you have. If you have a firmer mattress, you want a fuller pillow. If you have a softer mattress, you want a thinner pillow. That applies whether you sleep on your side or your back. The reasoning is that a softer mattress typically allows the body to sink into it, therefore there's less of a gap between your head and mattress. Firmer mattresses keep you from sinking in as much, leaving a larger gap between it and your neck to fill. Filler Material What your pillow is filled with can make a big difference, especially if you have allergies or are sensitive to certain materials. Most polyurethane or polyester fiber pillows are hypoallergenic and shouldn't irritate sensitive sleepers. Good quality polyester fibers will also retain their support all night while still being highly breathable, giving you sleep without the waking up in pain. Look for pillows that mention they have anti-allergen and anti-bacterial material, which will help prevent acne, puffiness, and alleviates chances of allergy attacks.   When to Replace Your Pillow?  Experts at the National Sleep Foundation recommend replacing your pillow every 18 months or so. Pillows can be packed with mold, dead skin cells and dust mites. Totally grossed out? Try adding a pillow protector to extend the healthy life of your pillow. To determine if it's really time to get a new pillow, test it by folding it in half and seeing if it springs back to flat. If it doesn't, it's time to find a new place to rest your head. One Last Thought You now have the power to go out there, find your pillow, and start sleeping better that very night.  Yes, there is a seemingly endless ocean of pillows out there, but that can be a good thing (if you know what to look for). And hey, now you know what to look for! In regards to what our personal choice is over here...well there are a few companies out there we believe have great pillows for any type of sleeper. But, there is one that stands above all and our fellow sleep scientists and clients seem to rave the most about - I have 4 of them myself. So stay tuned tomorrow and remember, if you ever feel lost in the wide world of bedding, you can always message us with any questions you have.  You Might Like    [Learn more about RevenueStripe...](                                Sun Universal Media | 314 E.
