Why Do We Need to Spend 1/3 of Our Lives Sleeping?
[Why do we need to spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping?]
Try to explain to an alien why we sleep...
You - âWell, we get tired. And our brain needs to rest.â
Alien - âI see. So, you find another way to defend yourself during rest?â
You - âWell ⦠ no. Our body is paralyzed, and we lose consciousness.â
There is an awkward pause. The alien tilts its head, feigning understanding.
You - âBut! We sometimes dream!â
Alien - âDream?â
Blindly, unaware of how ridiculous you sound, you continue with unprecedented speed and cadence:
You - âYes! Dreams are fantastical stories projected from the mind into the mind!
You catch your breath, and smile idiotically.
Alien - âAnd ⦠ this helps with survival?â
You - âWell ⦠ no. Sometimes the content confuses us in waking life,â you suddenly realize.
The alien blinks silently a few times, furrowing his non-eyebrows:
Alien - âLet me see if I understand. Your species spends one third of their lives paralyzed watching fantasy movies?â
It is reasonable to assume the human race is doomed at this uncomfortable juncture in the conversation, and aliens will plan their stealthy attack during this incapacitated, seemingly futile stage of our existence.
But sleep isnât futile and let's go over why.
Sleep Solidifies Memories Â
Sleep gives the brain an opportunity to reorganize data to help find a solution to problems, process newly learned information, and organize and archive memories.
The brain is able to reorder without the inputs it gets while awake. The brain has a chance to exercise important neuronal connections that might otherwise deteriorate due to lack of activity
Sleep Removes Toxins  Â
The brainâs waste removal system is more active during sleep. During sleep, the space between brain cells increases, allowing toxic proteins to be flushed out. Itâs possible that by removing these toxins from the brain, sleep may stave off neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimerâs.
Indeed, in an October 2013 issue of the journal Science, researchers published the results of a study indicating that the brain utilizes sleep to flush out toxins. This waste removal system, they suggest, is one of the major reasons why we sleep. Â
Sleep Promotes Recovery
Sleep is believed to be the time where the cells in our body repair themselves from the damage caused during waking hours.
Mammals that have high metabolism rates tend to sleep for several hours. Larger animals, humans included, get by with seven to eight hours of sleep. It is believed that we enter this resting stage so our energy reserves can be replaced and replenished.
Conserves Energy  Â
As we go to sleep, we are helping our body rest and conserve energy. It is during this phase when our lungs and heart do not work as tirelessly as when we are awake. This gives our organs a vital recharge.
The cardiovascular system also gets a break during sleep. Researchers have found that people with normal or high blood pressure experience a 20 to 30% reduction in blood pressure and 10 to 20% reduction in heart rate.
Sleep Improves Immune Function Â
Our circadian rhythms play a part in our sleep-wake cycle and improve our immune functions.
As mentioned before, it is during this rest period where our bodies repair themselves. It is also during sleep when our immune systems improve themselves to protect our health and well-being.
