Whatâs Cozy, Fuzzy, Warm and will Help you Drift Off to Sleep?
[Everyone needs sleep - meditation apps can help!]
Drum rollâ¦â¦â¦ A nice fluffy pair of socks!
In a previous edition of the newsletter we mentioned how adjusting your room temperature can provide the optimal setting for obtaining more sleep. Â So I hope youâre setting your thermostat to 65 and starting to reap the benefits of this sleep hack.
As counterintuitive as it may sound actually warming up certain parts of your body while maintaining a cold room temperature can help you sleep.
Sleeping With Socks On
Studies have found that selectively warming certain areas of the body by as little as one degree Fahrenheit can allow participants to fall asleep 20% faster.
There have actually been several lab experiments on this topic.
These experiments started with mice in a carefully controlled environment, and ended with live human participants in full-body temperature-regulation suits.
The findings? It really does work for all!
Most of the body's thermal systems work via blood vessels in our skin, largely concentrated in our extremities such as our hands, head, and feet. More than any other portion of the body, these areas control our core internal temperature.
When our extremities are warm, the blood vessels in our body dilate, releasing body heat. This is called 'Thermal Venting', and is a process by which our bodies regulate themselves. When our core body temperature drops at bedtime, it sends signals throughout your body that trigger the onset of sleep. Â
Science Based Benefits of Socks On
So what does all that cool scientific stuff we just mentioned mean for you and your socks?
Cold feet might be the reason behind your restless nights. When your feet are cold, they constrict the blood vessels and cause less blood to circulate. According to the National Sleep Foundation, warming your feet before you go to bed helps give your brain a clear sleep signal that itâs bedtime.
And socks are the easiest and safest bet to keep your feet warm overnight. Other methods such as rice socks, a hot water bottle, or a heating blanket may cause you to overheat or get burned.
The bottomline is this:
- Various studies show that socks are proven to help participants fall asleep quicker, wake up less times, and stay asleep longer!
- Sleeping in socks helps better regulate body temperature, which dips throughout the night. Being able to easily navigate those dips promotes deeper, longer sleep.
- For those with Raynaud's Disease (where the extremities are exceptionally prone to cold) sleeping in socks can help decrease symptoms and ward off attacks.
- And, perhaps most surprising, women experiencing menopause may also find wearing socks to bed can limit hot flashes during the night.
What Socks to Wear Â
Socks made of natural soft fibers such as merino wool or cashmere are best. They usually cost more than cotton or artificial fiber socks, but they are well worth the extra money. Make sure the socks you choose are not tight-fitting, which might constrict circulation and hinder proper warming of your feet.
In regards to compression socks, even though theyâre known to improve circulation by increasing blood flow, they arenât meant to be worn to bed. Compression socks move blood flow away from your feet and may block blood flow when youâre lying down so please refrain from wearing them.
So we really love this tip because it is so easy to implement and most people have decent enough socks to just use what they have. Many people at our office swear that it really does help (yep, I think it helped me, too) and so next time you go to bed, donât forget those little warm cozy socks to put on and get yourself a great nightâs rest.
