There's a lot of chatter about AI these days. Before chatbots like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Bard went mainstream, AI was all about text-to-image models. The idea that you could write a quick "prompt" and see any image you described seemed truly magical at first, although we've quickly taken it for granted — even as the text-to-image models improve by leaps and bounds. But so many of these AI image tools have been difficult for the average person to use — for example, they may ask for payment or require you have the right hardware and set everything up properly. And a lot of the software is pretty technical. That's why this particular tool is so cool — anyone can play with this amazing technology in just a few seconds, for free. Let's take a look! [Chris Hoffman, Author of Windows Intelligence] Chris Hoffman Author of Windows Intelligence --------------------------------------------------------------- Free, easy-to-use AI image tools If you haven't noticed, Microsoft is scrambling to be the leader in generative AI, bringing AI tools to the masses as fast as it can. ➜ Copilot AI aside, Microsoft offers one lesser-known collection of web-based AI tools that keeps getting more powerful. You can generate images, create designs for social media posts, eliminate objects from photos, remove backgrounds from images, and more. ⌚ Each tool will take you about 10 seconds to play with. It's called [Microsoft Designer](=), and it's a free web-based collection of easy-to-use AI image and design tools. It'll work on any device with a web browser, from an Android phone to a Windows PC to an iPhone to a Chromebook. Microsoft is also working on Designer apps for Android and iPhone, but they're not ready yet. It's all totally free — at least for now, during the preview phase — although it does require a Microsoft account (which is also free.) [Generative AI image tools in Microsoft Designer.] Tools here include: - Image Creator: Generate an image from a text prompt! This is the same thing as Microsoft's Bing Image Creator, although stripped of "Bing" branding. It uses OpenAI's DALL-E 3 model. - Design Creator: Create a design for a social media post, banner, or something like that. You can upload your own photos and other graphical elements, too. - Generative Erase: Click an element in a photo and erase it, using generative AI to fill in what "should be there" instead. - Remove Background: Remove the background from an image, like a photo of a person, keeping just what's in the foreground. There are also some other tools you'll find if you click around, like a Background Blur feature. And some features are coming soon, like a Sticker Creator for messaging apps and a Generative Expand feature for "expanding" photos by using the AI to guess what might be outside the frame. [An image generated with AI in Microsoft Designer.] There's a lot here to play with, and it's clear that Microsoft is investing heavily in Designer and using it as a showcase for generative AI tools. It'll be interesting to see what else pops up in Designer in the future. For now, this is still really cool to play with. 📌 You can try it out on the [Microsoft Designer website](=). 💰 Designer is totally free. Microsoft says "A paid Microsoft 365 subscription will be required to continue using some of these features at a later date," but it's not clear which features those are and what date that will be. 🕶 Microsoft Designer is covered by Microsoft's standard Privacy Statement. Now, speaking of making awesome things... SPONSORED MESSAGE Build professional-grade apps — without code 💪 [Cartoon of a penguin coding](=) Want to create the next AirBnB, YouTube, or Slack, but don’t have a developer?
