[Windows Intelligence](#) On modern versions of Windows, the Start menu's search box doesn't just search your PC. It searches the entire web â thanks to Bing. But, if you wish the Start menu's search box was better for finding the files on your computer, there's a convenient tool that's always just a few clicks away. And, whenever I use it, I'm impressed just how well it works. Yes, Windows geeks like myself often use other file-search tools. But this built-in Windows feature works pretty well, too. â This entire email will take you two minutes to read. Remember: If you'd rather not receive these Monday tip roundups, [you can easily opt out of them](=) without affecting the rest of your subscription. â [Got it â don't show this again](=)â This week's reader suggestion ð Set the Start menu aside: For finding files, the built-in search tools in File Explorer work surprisingly well. They're customizable, too. Across both Windows 10 and Windows 11, the File Explorer's search tools are incredibly underrated. Give them a try the next time you're looking for something! ð» This works on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. â Windows Intelligence reader Cory B. reminded me of just how useful those File Explorer file search features are. They're simple to use. First, just open a File Explorer window â you can do that by pressing Windows+E. Then, use the often-overlooked search box at the top-right corner of the window to search for a file. The box will search your current location in File Explorer. So, to search your OneDrive storage for a file, open your "OneDrive" folder first. To search your entire C: drive, click the "C:" drive first. [Type a search into the File Explorer's search box.] Once you've searched, you can drill down even further: On Windows 11, you'll see a "Search options" menu that lets you filter by tile type, date modified, size, and other options. [Use the "Search options" box on Windows 11.] On Windows 10, click the "Search" tab on the ribbon. You'll find a variety of tools for filtering your search there. [Click the "Search" tab on the ribbon on Windows 10.] This file-search tool is highly underrated. By default, Windows "indexes" locations like your user account's Documents folder, letting you search for text inside files like Word documents. But, even for folders that aren't indexed â like your full C: drive â this tool can find files and folders by their name. You might prefer another search tool (like the always-popular [Everything]() utility), but this particular search feature is built right in and accessible on any Windows PC in just a few seconds. ð Looking for this week's Android Intelligence reader tip?
