1. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen heads to New York with families of hostages held by Hamas Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen is heading to New York on October 23 night to speak at the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday on the Hamas attacks and Israel’s war against the terror organisation, The Times of Israel reported. He would bring families of Israelis kidnapped by Hamas, and would also take part in events with them in New York, Israel’s Foreign Ministry told The Times of Israel. 2. Mysuru decks up for grand finale of world renowned Dasara celebrations This palace city is all set for the spectacular procession on the occasion of Vijayadashami on October 24, which will also mark the grand finale of the 10-day long world-renowned ‘Mysuru Dasara’ celebrations. The celebrations began on October 15 atop Chamundi Hills. Celebrated as ‘Nada Habba’ (state festival), the Dasara or ‘Sharan Navaratri’ festivities was a grand affair this year, depicting Karnataka’s rich culture and traditions, coupled with reminiscence of royal pomp and glory. Thousands of people are expected to witness the ‘Jamboo Savari’, a march of a dozen caparisoned elephants led by ‘Abhimanyu’ carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari, the presiding deity of Mysuru royals, on a 750 kg howdah or “Ambari” with gold. 3. India, Malaysia begin two-week wargame in Umroi Armies of India and Malaysia on Monday began a two-week military exercise in Meghalaya’s Umroi with an aim to enhance operational cooperation between the two sides. The Malaysian Army contingent comprises troops from its fifth royal battalion while the Indian personnel deployed at the exercise Harimau Shakti belonged to the Rajput Regiment. The last edition of the exercise was conducted in the Pulai area of Kluang in Malaysia in November 2022. 4. J-K: Preparations for Dussehra celebrations in full swing in Srinagar Arrangements for Dussehra celebrations were being finalised here on Monday as effigies of Ravana reached the valley, a day before they are set on fire for ‘Ravana Dahan’ at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium to signify the victory of good over evil. Sanjay Tickoo, one of the organisers, told PTI: “We are making preparations for the Dussehra to be held on October 24. The effigies came from Jammu this morning. We are assembling them.” “This year, one effigy is 40 feet in height and the other two are 30 feet. They will be set on fire after sunset tomorrow,” he said. Tickoo said after the festival was stopped after the eruption of militancy in the valley, the Kashmiri Pandit community here has been celebrating it since 2007. 5. New Zealand opens inquest into Christchurch mosques attack The families of 51 people massacred in two Christchurch mosques in 2019 say they want a New Zealand coronial inquiry opening Tuesday to answer a key question: could any of them have been saved? White supremacist Brenton Tarrant shot and killed 51 Muslim worshippers in the mosques on March 15, 2019 in New Zealand’s deadliest modern-day mass shooting. Deputy Chief Coroner Brigitte Windley opens an inquiry in Christchurch on Tuesday to determine the facts of their deaths. It is expected to last until mid-December. 6. Colombian president to visit China this week Colombian President Gustavo Petro will visit China this week, Beijing’s foreign ministry said on October 23, with the leftist leader seeking to strengthen ties with the world’s second-largest economy. Petro’s visit comes at the invitation of President Xi Jinping and will take place from Tuesday to Thursday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said. He will meet with Xi on Wednesday, Colombia’s presidency said. The two will discuss progress on construction of the subway system in Bogota — which is being overseen by a Chinese firm, it added. 7. UK Statistics Office to publish adjusted version of jobless rate Britain’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) said it would publish an adjusted rate for unemployment and other measures of the labour market on October 24, a week after scaling back its jobs market data release due to low responses to its survey. “Tomorrow we will publish a new series using additional data sources to produce adjusted levels and rates for employment, unemployment and inactivity for the latest two 3-monthly periods,” the ONS said in a statement on Monday. “We will not be publishing the unadjusted June to August LFS (Labour Force Survey) data tomorrow.” 8. ICC World Cup | Formidable South Africa wary of Bangladesh threat South Africa will look to build on their superlative performance against the defending champions when they take on a struggling Bangladesh in their World Cup match on October 24, knowing well that taking the foot off the pedal at this stage could spell trouble. South Africa were off to a flier when they thrashed Sri Lanka and Australia by 100-plus margins, but a shocking defeat against the Netherlands pegged them back before they demolished England by 229 runs to put their campaign back on track. Bangladesh might not look too threatening in the World Cup but their record against the Proteas, especially in World Cups, gives them more than a chance in the contest. Three of South Africa’s six defeats to Bangladesh in ODIs have come in the last four years, including when the Tigers beat them by 21 runs in the 2019 World Cup. 9. Shakib Al Hasan backs Bangladesh to restrict high-flying South Africa batters in World Cup game Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan believes an on-song South Africa are not impregnable and can be restricted to smaller totals in the World Cup like the Netherlands did, adding that he would need his fast bowlers over spinners to deliver. Bangladesh, on a three-match losing streak, will face an uphill battle against South Africa here on Tuesday, who are coming off a 229-run thrashing of England and have recorded the two highest scores in the World Cup in four matches already.
