SC to hear Uddhav Thackeray faction’s plea against EC decision The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on Wednesday the Uddhav Thackeray faction’s plea challenging the decision of the Election Commission recognising the Eknath Shinde-led faction as the real Shiv Sena and ordering allocation of the “bow and arrow” poll symbol to it. 2. Delhi to get its new mayor on Wednesday after a long wait After much delay, Delhi will get its new mayor on Wednesday as the stage is set for the mayoral poll following a Supreme Court order after three failed attempts by the municipal body to hold the election to the top post in the past. The election to the posts of mayor, deputy mayor and six members of the standing committee will be held on February 22 after Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena gave his nod to convene the municipal House last week. 3. G20 Finance and Central Bank Deputies meeting starts today A meeting of G20 Finance and Central Bank Deputies will begin on Wednesday ahead of the first G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting under the Indian Presidency scheduled during February 24-25. Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth told reporters that the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting will be preceded by a two-day G20 FCBD meeting which will be inaugurated by Information & Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday. 4. Term of 22nd Law Commission ends, Union Cabinet likely to take a call on extending it The Union Cabinet is likely to take a call on Wednesday on extending the term of the 22nd Law Commission, sources said. The commission’s term ended on Monday. The Union Cabinet, which meets on Wednesday, could take up the law ministry proposal to grant an extension to the law panel which advices the government on complex legal issues. The length of the extension proposed was not yet known. 5. Morbi bridge crash: Oreva Group offers to pay ₹5 crore compensation to victims Clock manufacturing firm Oreva Group on Tuesday made an offer before the Gujarat High Court to pay an ‘interim’ compensation totalling Rs 5 crore to the kin of those who lost their lives and people left injured when a British-era suspension bridge maintained and operated by the firm collapsed in Morbi town in October last year. The bench posted the further hearing on Wednesday and asked Nanavaty to take instructions from his client whether the company would pay more compensation in the future because this payout has been termed as “not final”. 6. Gulab Chand Kataria to be sworn in as Assam Governor on Wednesday Assam Governor-designate Gulab Chand Kataria and his wife Anita Kataria were accorded a warm welcome by several cabinet ministers of the state on his arrival. Seventy-eight-year-old Kataria will be sworn in as the 31st governor of the state on Wednesday at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra. 7. Chautala, the MLA from Ellenabad, had given calling attention notice seeking to know the status of the report of the special enquiry team (SET) constituted to investigate the alleged liquor scam during the Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdown in 2020 in Haryana. 11. Maharashtra political row: SC asks how many times parties discussed in Parliament Speaker’s role in defection cases The Supreme Court on Tuesday told the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena the Speaker of a House functions like a tribunal in matters related to defection under the anti-defection law, and questioned as to how many times political parties have deliberated upon it in Parliament that this system is not working. The top court referred to the 1992 constitution bench verdict in Kihoto Hollohon versus Zachilhu and others and said parliamentarians have decided that he (speaker) will be tribunal under the Tenth Schedule (anti-defection law) of the Constitution and this court has upheld it. 12. Bhutan to celebrate King Jigme Wangchuck’s 43rd birthday on Wednesday Bhutan will celebrate the 43rd birthday of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on Wednesday, The Bhutan Live reported.The day will be celebrated in full swing after three years of COVID restrictions.
