Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday appealed to the Supreme Court against an order of the Election Commission (EC) recognising current Chief Minister Eknath Shindeâs âfactionâ as the real Shiv Sena party. Mr. Thackeray said the EC was âunfairâ, âbiasedâ and failed in its duties as a âneutral arbiter of disputesâ under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order of 1968. On February 17, the poll body allotted the party symbol âbow and arrowâ and the name âShiv Senaâ to the Shinde group. Mr. Thackeray said the ECâs decision amounted to an interference with the partyâs 2018 Constitution and results of the intra-party polls, following which Mr. Thackeray was made leader. The EC had refused to recognise the party Constitution as âsacrosanctâ, even termed it an instrument of âfiefdomâ and allowed Mr. Shinde to take over the leadership of the party. Thus, a constitutional authority has undermined the very principles of inner-party democracy, he argued. He further demanded that the EC should be dissolved immediately and reconstituted through an election after the Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain an oral mentioning made by the Thackeray camp to urgently list their plea challenging the decision of the poll body. âThey stole everything from me. The name (Shiv Sena) and symbol (bow and arrow) of our party have been stolen, but the name âThackerayâ cannot be stolen,â Mr. Thackeray said. Meanwhile, a complaint was filed against Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut after he allegedly made âobjectionable remarksâ against Mr. Shinde. An office-bearer of the Shinde faction lodged a complaint late Sunday night, alleging that Mr. Raut had used derogatory words against the CM and tarnished his image. Mr. Raut had also criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who said truth had triumphed after the SCâs decision to award the bow-and-arrow symbol to the Shinde faction.
