Six-time World champion and Olympic medallist boxer M.C. Mary Kom will head a government-appointed Oversight Committee to investigate charges levelled by prominent wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Members of the committee will include Olympic medallist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, shuttler Trupti Murgunde, former Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) CEO Commander Rajesh Rajagopalan, and former Executive Director (Team) of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Radhica Sreema, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced on Monday. “It [the oversight committee] will investigate the serious charges levelled by the wrestlers and will submit its report within a month. Till then, the committee will carry out the WFI’s day-to-day work,” said Mr. Thakur. Ms. Kom and Mr. Dutt are also part of a seven-member committee formed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to look into the wrestlers’ allegations. Wrestlers of international repute, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, began a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on January 18 and demanded the sacking of WFI chief. Allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment and intimidation, financial irregularities and administrative lapses, levelled against WFI chief by the wrestlers, will be probed by the Oversight Committee. The federation has, on the other hand, denied all allegations. Hours before the wrestlers called off their protest after assurance of action from the sports ministry on January 20, WFI claimed that the wrestlers’ protest was motivated by a “hidden agenda to dislodge the current management”. The sports ministry had sought an explanation from the federation after the protest, and WFI denied all charges in its response.
