Delhi Mayor election: aldermen to take oath first, says Presiding officer despite AAP’s opposition With the MCD House set to reconvene today, presiding officer Satya Sharma has said the LG-appointed aldermen will take oath first, despite the fierce opposition by AAP in the last meeting that was adjourned amid chaos. The maiden meeting of the newly elected MCD council on January 6 was adjourned without the election of the mayor and the deputy mayor after AAP and BJP councillors clashed over presiding officer’s decision to administer the oath to the 10 aldermen first. 2. Tunisha Sharma case: co-actor Sheezan Khan moves HC for bail and quashing of FIR Actor Sheezan Khan, arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of his co-star Tunisha Sharma, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking bail and quashing of the case. Mr. Khan in his petitions has said that to have a relationship and break-ups are normal facets of life and hence he cannot be held responsible for Tunisha’s death. While Khan’s plea seeking bail would be heard by a single bench of Justice M S Karnik on Tuesday, his second petition for quashing of the FIR and release on interim bail is likely to be heard by a division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and P K Chavan on January 30. 3. JNUSU poster announces screening of controversial BBC documentary, varsity admin orders event’s cancellation A fresh row erupted in JNU as a poster was purportedly released by its students’ union announcing the screening of a controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at its office on Tuesday, prompting university authorities to issue a warning to cancel the event or face “strict disciplinary action”. The government had on Friday directed social media platforms Twitter and YouTube to block links to the documentary titled “India: The Modi Question”. The Ministry of External Affairs has trashed the documentary as a “propaganda piece” that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset. 4. Jharkhand BJP’s two-day Executive Committee meeting begins in Deoghar Jharkhand BJP’s two-day Executive Committee meeting started in Deoghar town on Monday to discuss various issues including strategies for 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, a senior BJP leader said. Around 400 executive committee members are taking part in the meeting, which will conclude on Tuesday. 5. Obscene video circulation case: HC asks Mumbai police not to take any action against Rakhi Sawant till Tuesday The Bombay High Court on Monday directed the city police to not take any action against actor Rakhi Sawant till Tuesday in connection with a case lodged against her by a model for allegedly circulating and displaying her obscene and objectionable video. Sawant moved the HC seeking pre-arrest bail in the case. Her lawyer on Monday told a single bench of Justice M S Karnik that Sawant had been cooperating with the police in its probe since the FIR was lodged in November 2022. 6. AAP urges BJP to cooperate with councillors ahead of Jan 24 mayor election Senior AAP leader Durgesh Pathak on Monday requested the BJP to cooperate with councilors once the MCD house convenes on January 24 for Mayoral election. Urging the BJP to let the house function “peacefully”, Mr. Pathak said that the AAP councilors want the Mayoral election to be held as soon as possible. 7. Three EC special observers in Tripura to review poll preparedness Three special observers of the Election Commission arrived in Tripura on Monday to review preparedness and security arrangement for the upcoming assembly elections in the northeastern state, a senior official said. Three special observers - Yogendra Tripathy, Vivek Johri and B Murli Kumar - will hold meetings with officials on Tuesday to take stock of the election preparations and other poll-related issues, Additional CEO Subhasish Bondhyapadyay said. 8. Indian shuttlers eye redemption at Indonesia Masters Top Indian shuttlers, including Lakshya Sen, will look to quickly recover from the India Open disappointment when they begin their campaign at the Indonesia Masters Super 500 tournament, starting here on Tuesday.
