Delhi Commission of Women chief Swati Maliwal was allegedly dragged by a car in the early hours of J

Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal was allegedly dragged by a car in the early hours of January 19 near AIIMS Hospital in South Delhi. Ms. Maliwal was out inspecting the state of women’s safety in the city at night, she said in a tweet. The DCW chief told the police that a drunk man drove up to her twice and asked her to sit in his car. He rolled up the window when she moved close to reprimand him, and her hand got stuck in the window. “She was dragged for 10-15 metres,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chandan Chowdhary said. The police said they received a call from a patrol van opposite AIIMS gate about the incident at 3.11 a.m. on Thursday, and the car was intercepted at 3.34 a.m. The driver, Harish Chandra, a resident of Sangam Vihar, was arrested. He was found in an inebriated condition and sent to 14-day judicial custody. The police have registered a case against the accused under IPC Sections 323, 341, 354, 509, and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act. “You can imagine the condition [of women’s safety] if the chairperson of the Women’s Commission is not safe in Delhi,” Ms. Maliwal said on Twitter. The incident comes shortly after a 20-year-old woman died in the capital after her scooty was hit by a car and she was dragged around for about four kms in outer Delhi’s Sultanpuri on January 1, 2023. A report, released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NRCB) in August 2022, ranked Delhi as the most unsafe metro city for women. For the third consecutive year, Delhi topped the list of crimes against women among all the metropolitan cities. The capital recorded the highest number of rape cases among all 19 metropolitan cities with an average of three rapes being reported every day in 2021. Was this newsletter forwarded to you?
