Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday said the Central Bureau of Investigation is searching his office in Delhi Secretariat in connection with excise policy-related case “Today again CBI has reached my office. They are welcome. They raided my house, raided my office, searched my locker, even searched my village. Nothing has been found against me and nothing will be found because I have not done anything wrong. Sincerely worked for the education of the children of Delhi,” Sisodia tweeted. However, a CBI source said, “A CBI team visited Sisodia’s office today. It was not a search operation.” Sisodia is one of the 15 accused named by the agency in its FIR registered on August 17, alleging multiple irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the now-withdrawn excise policy. The CBI had earlier conducted searches at several locations in Delhi, including the official residence of Sisodia, Gurugram, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Bengaluru. Based on its findings, it arrested Vijay Nair, former chief executive officer of Mumbai-based Only Much Louder, who is also the Aam Aadmi Party communication in-charge. It also arrested liquor businessman, Abhishek Boinpally, an associate of co-accused, Arun Ramchandra Pillai. China reports almost 60,000 COVID-related deaths since December China’s National Health Commission said the country had reported close to 60,000 deaths from COVID-19 since the ending of the stringent “zero-COVID” policy on December 7, 2022. In the 36-day period from December 8, 2022 to January 12, 2023, there were a total of 59,938 deaths, Jiao Yahui, director of the National Health Commission’s medical affairs department, said. This included 5,503 deaths from respiratory failure directly caused by COVID-19, and 54,435 deaths of those who had underlying conditions and were then infected. According to the NHC, the average age was 80 while 90% were aged 65 and above. As of end-November, shortly before China’s abrupt change in policy and almost overnight lifting of restrictions and ending of lockdowns, only 40% of the 30 million above-80 population had completed the full three doses of Chinese vaccines required to prevent hospitalisation and death, according to data from Hong Kong. While most cases have been reported as mild, the unvaccinated elderly population has been vulnerable amid the rapid spread of cases, leading to huge pressure in recent weeks on the medical system. There is now concern of a spread of cases to rural areas as many return home ahead of the January 22 Chinese New Year. Congress MP Santokh Chaudhary passes away, Bharat Jodo Yatra suspended for a day Congress Member of Parliament Santokh Singh Chaudhary died on Saturday after he suffered a cardiac arrest. The 76-year-old Congress MP from Jalandhar was participating in Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, which is currently underway in Punjab. The party suspended the Yatra for a day as a mark of respect for Chaudhary “The Yatra will resume tomorrow afternoon from Khalsa College Ground, Jalandhar,” AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter. “Due to the unexpected and shocking demise of Santokh Singh Chaudhary, Congress MP from Jalandhar, the press conference of Rahul Gandhi originally scheduled in Jalandhar tomorrow will now be held on 17th January in Hoshiarpur,” he said in another tweet. Chaudhary was in the march, which started in the morning from Phillaur and reportedly suffered a cardiac attack when the march was between Phillaur and Goraya towns. He was rushed to the civil hospital at Phagwara, where he was declared brought dead. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the untimely passing away of our MP, Shri Santokh Singh Chaudhary. His loss is a great blow to the party and organisation. In this hour of grief, my heart goes out to his family, friends and followers. May his soul rest in peace.” Expressing his condolences, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in a tweet, said “I’m deeply saddened by the untimely death of Congress Member of Parliament from Jalandhar, Santokh Singh Chaudhary. May God rest his soul in peace.” Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal disqualified The Lok Sabha Secretariat has issued a notification disqualifying Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal, who was recently convicted in an attempt to murder case by a court in the Union Territory. Faizal has ceased to be a people’s representative with effect from Wednesday, January 11, 2023 following the notification issued on Friday. The notification is to be published in the Gazette of India. The accused belonged to the Nationalist Congress Party. Faizal was sent to Kannur Central Jail after he along with three others were convicted and sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment by the Sessions Court of Kavaratti in Lakshadweep early this week in a case dating back to 2009. The notification issued by Lok Sabha Secretary-General Utpal Kumar Singh stated that Faizal “stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. 11 January, 2023 in terms of the provisions of Article 102(l)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.” The pace at which the Lok Sabha Secretariat has issued the notification of disqualification without waiting to see out whether the conviction would be stayed has raised eyebrows. For instance, when a CBI court convicted Lalu Prasad in the fodder scam case on September 30, 2013,the Lok Sabha Secretariat had issued the notification disqualifying him with effect from the conviction date almost three weeks later on October 21. However, in this case, it took the Lok Sabha Secretariat only a day. The conviction came on January 11 and the notification was published on January 13. In Brief: A series of explosions was heard in Kyiv before the air raid sirens were turned on. Deputy head of Ukraine’s presidential office Kyrylo Tymoshenko said on Telegram that a missile attack on critical infrastructure in the capital was underway. Kyiv’s city military administration said in a telegram post that an unidentified object of infrastructure was hit in the city and emergency services were operating at the site of the strike. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said that “explosions were heard in Dniprovskyi district, left bank of Kyiv.” In a separate Telegram post, Klitschko said fragments of a missile fell on a non-residential area in Holosiivskyi district, on the right bank, and added that no casualties were reported.
