Indian and Chinese soldiers were engaged in a face-off along the Line of Actual Control in Tawang Se

Indian and Chinese soldiers were engaged in a face-off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Tawang Sector of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 and both sides suffered “minor injuries” in the scuffle, the Army said in a statement on Monday. According to sources, 20 Indian soldiers and many more on the Chinese side were injured. “On December 9, 2022, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops contacted the LAC in the Tawang sector, which was contested by own troops in a firm and resolute manner. This face-off led to minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides. Both sides immediately disengaged from the area,” the Army said. The clash occurred as a large PLA patrol came across into the Indian side, one Army source said. According to another source, a few soldiers sustained fractured limbs and are reportedly recuperating at a hospital in Guwahati. This is the first such incident to occur between the countries after June 15, 2020, when 20 Indian soldiers were killed and several others were injured in violent clashes with the PLA troops in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley. The clash also comes at a crucial time, shortly after the leaders of India and China made their first public contact after over two years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping were seen engaged in a brief conversation on the sidelines of the G-20 summit on November 15, 2022 – after publicly icing each other out at the at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit at Samarkand in September, despite standing next to each other during the joint photo call. Cooperation between India and China is also important for the smooth functioning of the 2023 G-20 meetings since India has the annual presidency of the group. Was this newsletter forwarded to you?
