A determined goalkeeper with numerous saves and Croatia battled past tournament favourite Brazil 4-2 on penalties on Friday night to reach the World Cup semifinals following a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes. In the other quarterfinal, Argentina edged out the Netherlands, ranked eighth in the world and considered a possible contender for the finals, also in penalties after a 2-2 draw in 120 minutes. Croatia, the 2018 runner-up, came through its second consecutive shootout after beating Japan too on penalties in the round of 16. In an evening filled with tension and drama, Brazil superstar Neymar thought he had won the game when he rifled in an extra-time goal for the five-time world champion. But Croatia substitute Bruno Petkovic equalised three minutes from the end of extra-time, helping his side draw level with Brazil. The Croats kept their composure from the penalty spot as Brazilâs Rodrygo and Marquinhos failed to convert. Throughout the match, Croatia refused to be intimidated by its more illustrious opponents and, together with goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic, successfully stifled all of Brazilâs moves. In stoppage time of the first period of extra-time, Neymar launched an attack outside the box, played two consecutive 1-2s to bamboozle the tired Croatian defence and then rounded the keeper to equal Brazil great Peleâs official record of 77 international goals. But the Croats refused to surrender and the equaliser and penalties sealed Brazilâs fate with Livakovic rising to the occasion in spectacular fashion. In the other quarter final, Argentina beat the Netherlands 4-3 in a penalty shootout to keep Lionel Messiâs World Cup hopes alive. The Dutch forced the match to go into penalties by snatching a 2-2 draw after being down 0-2. The Argentine goalkeeper Emil Martinez thwarted the tries of Virgil Van Dyke and Berghuis, dashing the Netherlandsâ hopes. Argentina and Croatia will meet in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
