At the first meeting of the Congress Steering Committee on Sunday, the newly elected party president, Mallikarjun Kharge, said those party office-bearers unable to meet their responsibilities should quit. A transitional body working in place of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the Steering Committee unanimously resolved that the 85th Plenary Session of the party will be held in Raipur in the second half of February 2023. The new CWC will be elected according to the partyâs constitution during the plenary. In his opening statement at the meeting, Mr. Kharge underlined the importance of âorganisational accountability from top to bottomâ and stressed that winning electoral battles was essential for the party to serve the country, and this, in turn, could only be achieved by a strong organisation that delivered on peopleâs expectations. He asked the party general secretaries and leaders in charge of the State units to introspect. âAsk yourself, do you spend at least 10 days each month in the State under your charge,â Mr. Kharge said. Sounding out the States that would face the Assembly elections before 2024, Mr. Kharge said they should have an âactivity schedule in placeâ. Partyâs general secretary (Communication) Jairam Ramesh, meanwhile, pointed out Steering Committeeâs statement emphasising on âunityâ. âThe Steering Committee calls upon every Congressman and Congresswoman to work with unity, faith, determination, and a sense of collective purpose. The victory of the party will be the victory of every leader and karyakarta and a victory for the idea of India that guided our freedom movement and is enshrined in our Constitution,â the statement notes. This is especially significant in the backdrop of the recent unseemly and a very public tug of war between Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his former Deputy Sachin Pilot.
