Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping were seen engaged in a brief conversat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping were seen engaged in a brief conversation on the sidelines of G-20 Summit in Indonesia on Tuesday. The interaction is remarkable as this is the first time when the two leaders were seen speaking publicly to each other since tensions in the Galwan Valley in early 2020. Twenty Indian personnel were killed in violent clashes with the Chinese troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh in June 2020 in what was touted as the worst incident of violence between the two countries in decades. The two leaders had also come together in September at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at Samarkand but did not have any public interaction despite standing next to each other during the joint photo call. At the G-20 Summit, PM Modi was seen standing up from the dinner table, where he was seated next to the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and turning around to greet President Xi as he walked in. The two leaders then shook hands and spoke to each other. There was no update on what they talked about from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), but sources said they “exchanged courtesies at the conclusion of the dinner”. Elaborating on PM Modi’s meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, the MEA said, “[PM Modi and President Biden] reviewed the continuing deepening of the India-U.S. strategic partnership including cooperation in future-oriented sectors like critical and emerging technologies, advanced computing, artificial intelligence, etc.” The prime minister is also scheduled to hold more structured, bilateral meetings with at least eight of the 16 leaders present in Bali, including his first such interaction with newly-appointed U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Giorgia Meloni, who became the prime minister of Italy in 2022.
