Voting for legislative assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh concluded peacefully on Saturday with

Voting for legislative assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh concluded peacefully on Saturday with a 73.64% turnout, as per provisional data at 11:30 P.M. The state had recorded a 75.57% turnout in 2017. The highest turnout was observed in the Doon constituency at 85.2% and the lowest at 62.53% in Shimla. The incumbent Bhartiya Janata Party-government is seeking re-election in the state which has alternated power between it and Congress for over three decades now. In the run-up to the polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appealing to voters to overturn this trend, had stated, “If the patient changes the medicine again and again, he cannot be cured. So how can there be development due to frequent changes of government.” Earlier in the day on Saturday, he had tweeted to urge voters’ enthusiastic participation in the “festival of democracy”, also seeking a record turnout. He also greeted young voters who were to exercise their franchise for the first time. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also appealed to voters to come out in large numbers and make their contribution to the progress and prosperous future of the state. “Himachal will vote for OPS (old pension scheme), Himachal will vote for employment, Himachal will vote for Har Ghar Lakshmi,” he had stated earlier. On Saturday, 55.25 lakh voters cast their votes across 7,884 polling stations. A total of 412 candidates are in the fray, of which 24 are women. The outcome of the election is slated to be announced on December 8. Was this newsletter forwarded to you? Head over to our newsletter subscription page to sign up for Editor‘s Pick and more.
