Tuesday was a historic day for the United Kingdom as it got its first-ever non-white Prime Minister

Tuesday was a historic day for the United Kingdom as it got its first-ever non-white Prime Minister in Rishi Sunak, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer and Britain’s youngest Prime Minister in recent times. The 42-year-old was chosen by his fellow Conservative MPs to lead the party and country, following former Prime Minister Liz Truss’s announcement that she was resigning, having lost the support of her fellow MPs after a failed ‘mini budget’ that deeply rattled markets. The former investment banker and hedge fund manager will have the daunting task of trying to get the British economy back on the rails while attempting to unite the Conservative Party, which has produced three PMs in under two months. Mr. Sunak, a committed Brexiteer, will face turbulence as most of Britain’s economic headwinds are of Westminster’s own making, says The Hindu opinion piece “…the story of Liz Truss’ rise and fall, and of Rishi Sunak’s rise to become Britain’s fifth PM in six years is also the story of Brexit Britain. This is the story of a country that voted to pull up the drawbridge in exchange for honeyed promises of ‘taking back control’ of immigration and its economy. Brexit Britain’s challenges remain,” it adds. India’s bilateral relations with the U.K. may well be poised to see greater two-way exchanges as Mr. Sunak takes over. His vision for India-U.K. bilateral ties has gone beyond the opportunity for the U.K. to sell things in India, wanting Britain to also “learn from India”. Trade experts say Mr. Sunak becoming the PM is likely to give much-needed momentum to ongoing negotiations for the proposed free trade agreement between India and Britain. Meanwhile, Mr. Sunak’s rise as the PM triggered a war of words between the ruling BJP and Opposition parties. While the Opposition lamented the alleged majoritarian nature of the Modi Government, the BJP cited A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s and Dr. Manmohan Singh’s rise as the country’s president and prime minister. The BJP also rejected any parallel drawn between Italian-origin Sonia Gandhi not getting prime ministership in 2004 and Britain’s ruling party choosing Mr. Sunak as its leader.
