Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whilst addressing the 90 th Interpol General Assembly stated called for global cooperation to combat terrorism, corruption, drug trafficking, poaching and organised crime. In a related context, he stated, âThe pace of change of these dangers is faster than earlier. When threats are global, the response cannot be just local! It is high time that the world comes together to defeat these threats. The three-day 90 th Interpol General Assembly of the Interpol concludes on October 21. It is being attended by delegations from 195 member countries comprising of ministers, police chiefs of countries, heads of national central bureaus and senior police officers. The supreme governing body meets annually to take key decisions about its functioning. The General Assembly is being held in India after about 25 years. The last such meeting that took place in the country was in 1997. Mr. Modi stated that India had been combating trans-national terrorism for several decades. In this light, he added, â...it is no longer enough that terrorism is fought only in the physical space. It is now spreading its presence through online radicalisation and cyber threats. At the click of a button, an attack can be executed or system can be brought to their knees.â He reiterated that there was a need to further develop international strategies for setting up early detection and warning systems, protecting transportation services, securing communication infrastructure and critical infrastructure, enhancing technical and technological assistance and intelligence. He also spoke about how corruption and financial crimes harm the welfare of citizens in many countries. He said that police and law enforcement agencies need to devise procedures and protocols to increase cooperation. âInterpol can help by speeding up Red Corner Notices for fugitive offenders,â Prime Minister Modi said.
