Hemant Soren has won the vote of confidence in the time since this article was written. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government is all set to seek a trust vote in the State Assembly today amid a deepening political crisis. The United Progressive Alliance MLAs, who were shifted to a resort in Raipur in Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh, reached Ranchi a day ahead of the trust vote. The BJP, meanwhile, convened its legislators for a meeting to chalk out its strategy for the House. The party has decided to take part in the special session of the Assembly today, but oppose any attempt by the State government to introduce Bills during its duration. The political stalemate has been continuing in the State ever since the Election Commission conveyed its decision in the corruption allegation against the Chief Minister to Governor Ramesh Bais on August 25. The ECâs move was reportedly prompted by a petition to the Governor by State BJP leaders, seeking Mr. Sorenâs disqualification over his acquisition of a mine. Amid lingering fear of poaching by the BJP, over 31 UPA MLAs were shifted to a luxury resort in Raipur on August 31. In the 81-member House, the JMM-led UPA enjoys an absolute majority with the JMM having 30 legislators, Congress having 18 (three of them, though, were recently caught with a huge cash stash in West Bengal and sent to jail), Rashtriya Janata Dal, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and Nationalist Congress Party having one each. The Opposition BJP has 26 MLAs, while its ally All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) has two; two other legislators support them.
