Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Pallonji Mistry was killed in a road accident on Sunday after his car hit a divider in Maharashtra's Palghar district neighbouring Mumbai, a police official said. Mistry was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. “The accident took place around 3.15 p.m., when Mr. Mistry was travelling to Mumbai from Ahmedabad. The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems an accident,” the police official said. A Kasa police station officer said the accident occurred at Charoti Naka on the Surya river bridge under the Kasa police station limits. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over Mistry’s demise. He said Mistry was a promising business leader who believed in India’s economic prowess and his passing away was a big loss to the world of commerce and industry. Several Union Ministers and Opposition leaders also condoled the death. Police also said that two more people travelling with Mistry were injured in the accident. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asked the State police to conduct a detailed investigation into the accident. Rahul Gandhi accuses PM Modi, BJP, RSS of spreading fear and hatred Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said that the BJP and Sangh leaders divided the country and deliberately created fear and hatred. Addressing a rally against price rise organised by the party in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, he said the government shut the Opposition’s path from speaking in Parliament, and the “only way for us is to talk directly to people and tell the truth of the country to people and hear them out”. He also said this was precisely why the Congress will hold the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ to talk directly to people and discuss their issues. Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP and the RSS of spreading fear and hatred, and weakening the country, Gandhi said it will not benefit India, but China and Pakistan. The Modi dispensation was unable to provide employment and benefitted only select two industrialists, who were “working for the prime minister 24 hours” and the PM, in turn, was also working 24 hours for these two industrialists, he further alleged. The three ‘black farm laws’ were brought in not to help farmers, but to benefit a few industrialists, he added. During the rally, Congress workers put up banners demanding that Gandhi once again lead the party. He resigned from the top post following the party’s debacle in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Sonia Gandhi has been leading the party as interim president since August 2019. Meanwhile, the BJP mocked the rally and dubbed it “Rahul Gandhi relaunch 4.0” and said it was meant to save the Gandhi family and not against price rise. “This rally is meant to save the family and not to protest against price rise. And to relaunch Rahul Gandhi, who has been launched several times in politics. This rally is 'Rahul Gandhi relaunch 4.0', as no one wants to lead the Congress,” BJP national spokesperson Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said. Jharkhand UPA MLAs, camping in Raipur, reach Ranchi ahead of crucial trust vote Amid a deepening political crisis in Jharkhand, and a 10-day-long stalemate and suspense, Chief Minister Hemant Soren-led United Progressive Alliance government is all set to seek a trust vote in the State Assembly on Monday. With hours left to the decision, the UPA and the Opposition BJP have been spurred into action. While the UPA MLAs, who were camping out in a resort in Raipur in Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh, reached Ranchi on Sunday evening, the BJP too convened its legislators for a meeting to chalk out its strategy in the House. It is said that all UPA MLAs will be put up in a place in Ranchi till the trust vote. Ghulam Nabi Azad unveils J&K roadmap, says will fight for right to land, jobs for locals Former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad revealed his roadmap for Jammu and Kashmir and stressed on the restoration of “full Statehood and right to land and employment to native domiciles” while distancing from any emotive demands like pre-August 5, 2019 position or unification of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir. “Our agenda is for all. We will fight for the restoration of full statehood and the right to land and employment to native domiciles. We don’t want an assembly with a Lieutenant Governor but a Governor. We don’t want outsiders to apply in J&K for jobs, which equals a drop in the ocean. If they (outsiders) apply, jobs will vanish for locals,” Azad said in Jammu. He was addressing his first rally since quitting the Congress last month. He plans to launch a political party soon. He was cautious to touch on any emotive issues like other regional parties in the Union Territory like Article 370, seeking restoration of pre-August 5, 2019 position, mentioning Pakistan or demand to re-unify the erstwhile J&K, which included Ladakh. In a fleeting reference to J&K’s special status, he said it was the Dogra king Maharaja Hari Singh who negotiated a J&K Constitution within the Indian constitution in 1947. In Brief PETA India has submitted a veterinary inspection report to the Forest Department officials in Tamil Nadu and Assam to establish the continued abuse of a captive female elephant in a temple. A four-member team from Assam, headed by Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Hridesh Mishra, is currently in Tamil Nadu to inspect the condition of the elephant. Joymala, renamed Jeymalyatha, was reportedly given on a six-month lease to Tamil Nadu from Assam in 2008, and never returned, making her continued use in the southern State illegal under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The elephant was kept in the illegal custody of the Srivilliputhur Nachiyar Thirukovil temple for over a decade before being shifted to the Krishnan Kovil temple nearby, PETA India said.
