Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his ninth consecutive Independence Day address on Monday, said India was entering a decisive phase in its war against corruption and it was time that the country stepped towards a new direction with a new resolve. He added that nepotism and misogyny were the other big challenges that had to be combated. “This nepotism harms India’s talents and capabilities. This is also a reason for corruption as people resort to it when they see no other option,” he said. According to him, dynasty politics had done the most injustice to the country’s strength and capabilities. Dedicating a big part of his speech targeting corruption, Prime Minister Modi said that it was seen that some people did not have enough space to hide their illicit money with many in the country not having enough space to live. This was believed to be pointed at the huge amounts of allegedly unaccounted cash and other assets recovered during raids from the houses of some opposition leaders. Mr Modi also gave a call for setting big resolutions and spelled out “Panch Pran” (five resolves) to fulfil the dreams of freedom fighters for the country by 2047, that is, the centenary year of Independence. These include a resolve for a developed India, removing any trace of the colonial mindset, taking pride in the country’s legacy, strength of unity, and fulfilling the duties of citizens with honesty. These should be done by both the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers, he said. Was this newsletter forwarded to you?
