The 15th President of India Droupadi Murmu greeted all Indians in her address on the eve of Independence Day, saying that it marked the day when the countryâs people decided to change its destiny, unshackling it from colonial rulers. Remembering those who made âenormous sacrifices to make it possible for us to live in a free Indiaâ, the President added that August 14 was observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day so as to promote social harmony, unity and empowerment. Ms. Murmu said that India had proven wrong the sceptics who doubted the success of the democratic form of government in the country, citing the example of the universal adult franchise right since the beginning of the Republic. She said that the lessons learnt by the people of the country in the last 75 years would prove to be useful as India moved towards the next milestone in its journey â the Amrit Kaal, 25 years to the celebration of the centenary of Independence. The President said that by the year 2047, we will have fully realised the dreams of our freedom fighters. She also remembered those who drafted the Indian Constitution, led by Bhimrao Ambedkar, adding that India would be giving a concrete shape to the vision of the leaders in the Amrit Kaal. The President spoke about how despite the devastation and economic distress caused by the pandemic in the last couple of years, âIndia got its act togetherâ and was now moving forward, being among the fastest growing major economies in the world. âThe keyword for India today is compassion; for the downtrodden, for the needy and for those on the margins,â she concluded. The report on Presidentâs speech appears on the front page of The Hindu as it was her first Independence Day address to the nation after recently being elected President. While the President invoked the next milestone for the country being the centenary of its Independence, the remarks made Seventy-five years ago, on this day, by Indiaâs first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru rang true: âThe achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater triumphs and achievements that await us. Are we brave enough and wise enough to grasp this opportunity and accept the challenge of the future?â Was this newsletter forwarded to you?
