(The Bihar alliance has ended and Nitish Kumar has resigned as Chief Minister after this newsletter was written) Cracks in Biharâs ruling alliance appear to be becoming visible with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar calling for a meet of all MPs and MLAs of the Janata Dal (United). The agenda is to discuss the situation in the party and the state following the resignation of former National President R.C.P. Singh. The former Union Minister was denied a renomination to the Rajya Sabha because of which he could not continue being in the Union Council of Ministers. The ruling alliance in Bihar, consisting of the BJP and JD(U), have had differences of opinion on caste-based census and recently, the alleged mismanagement during the Agniveer protests. JD(U) President Rajiv Ranjan Singh, aka Lalan Singh, used sharp words to describe certain âconspiraciesâ against his party. He pointed to how Lok Janshakti Party, headed by Chirag Paswan, was allegedly used in the State Assembly elections to undercut their votes. The fluid political situation has thus fuelled speculation that Mr. Kumar may walk out of the alliance. The incumbent Chief Minister had recently skipped the swearing-in ceremony of President Draupadi Murmu and at least four meetings called by the Union Government â expressing his displeasure over the alliance. He is believed to have already spoken to Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Sunday. Mr. Kumar had returned to the NDA fold in 2017 pointing to the allegations of corruption against former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family members, including his son Tejashwi Yadav. Rashtriya Janata Dal Vice President Shivanand Tiwary, reiterating the partyâs commitment to fighting the BJP, said if Mr. Kumar decided to join the fight, they would take him along. On being asked about the bitterness from the past, he said, âIn politics, we cannot remain prisoners of the past.â Was this newsletter forwarded to you?
