West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected India’s 14 th Vice President on Friday. Of a total of 710 valid votes recorded in the 16 th Vice-Presidential election, Mr. Dhankhar received 528. The opposition candidate Margret Alva received only 182 votes. She had expected about 200 votes taking into account the support announced by the opposition parties. Congratulating the new Vice President-elect, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “...At a time when India marks Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, we are proud to be having a Kisan Putra Vice President who has excellent legal knowledge and intellectual prowess.” The Vice-Presidential elections yet again reflected the inherent friction among the opposition parties. Only two of the thirty-six Trinamool Congress MPs turned up to vote. The ruling party of West Bengal had earlier said that it would boycott the elections as it was not consulted before announcing Ms. Alva’s candidature. The decision to field Ms. Alva was taken at the residence of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury congratulated Ms. Alva on representing the spirit of the opposition with “dignity and grace”. Congress MP in the upper house Jairam Ramesh expressed his regret on the Trinamool Congress MPs not voting for Ms. Alva. The incoming Vice-President had resigned from his position as the Governor of West Bengal to contest the elections. Mr. Dhankhar has had a much sour relationship with incumbent West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She had accused him of interfering in an elected state government’s decision-making. Ms. Banerjee had also sought on multiple occasions that he be withdrawn. Mr. Dhankhar has practised law at the Rajasthan High Court as well as the Supreme Court. He also served as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in 1990. Was this newsletter forwarded to you? Head over to our newsletter subscription page to sign up for Editor‘s Pick and more.
