Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President J.P. Nadda announced on Saturday that the incumbent West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar would be the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)âs Vice President candidate. The announcement was made following a meeting of the BJPâs high decision-making body, that is, the Parliamentary Board which comprises of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Roads and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Mr. Dhankar, of late, has had a much sour relationship with the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. It was in January that Ms. Banerjee had blocked the Governor on Twitter stating that his tweets were âtargeting and threateningâ her as well as other government officials as if they were âhis bonded labourersâ. She accused him of interfering in an elected governmentâs decision making. Ms Banerjee had written four letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking that he be withdrawn. The West Bengal Chief Minister has however, until the newsletter went out, not commented on his candidature. Mr. Dhankar has practised law at the Rajasthan High Court as well as the Supreme Court. He contested the Lok Sabha election in 1989 and has served the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in 1990. He was also an MLA from the Kishangarh Vidhan Sabha constituency in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. Prime Minister Modi referring to him âKisan Putraâ recalled Mr. Dhankharâs contribution for the well-being of farmers, youth, women and the marginalised. Mr. Nadda, endorsing the candidature, stated that he had overcome many socioeconomic hurdles in his own life to achieve big in public life. Polls to elect the next Vice President would be conducted on August 6 and the results would be announced the same day. The new Vice President would be sworn in on August 10.
