In what could emerge as an endgame to the political crisis in Maharashtra, the Bhartiya Janta Party?

In what could emerge as an endgame to the political crisis in Maharashtra, the Bhartiya Janta Party’s (BJP) state unit on Tuesday requested Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari to call for a floor test in the assembly. A delegation led by former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, also comprising senior leaders Ashish Shelar, Chandrakant Patril and Pravin Darekar met the Governor on Tuesday. The meeting with the Governor took place following Mr Fadnavis’ return from Delhi where he spoke to Union Minister Amit Shah and BJP President J.P. Nadda. BJP has claimed that it has nothing to do with the internal feud in the Shiv Sena. It has called on all MLAs and affiliated independents to Mumbai on Wednesday. The party has clarified that no step would be taken until and unless there is clarity with regard to the endgames of every scenario. Sources within the party informed that Mr Fadnavis was accompanied by lawyer and MP Mahesh Jethmalani when he met the senior party leaders in Delhi on Tuesday – the premise was to discuss the legal and political angles as well as the options before the party. BJP has been claiming that it has the support of 169 MLAs – enough to prove a majority. Parallelly, Shiv Sena President and incumbent Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray made another emotional appeal to the rebel MLAs for discussions. Mr Thackeray said that he still cared for his legislators and could resolve the crisis by talking to them personally. “...Many of you are in touch with us and you are still a Shivsainik by heart,” he said. Countering the notion, rebel group leader Eknath Shinde challenged Mr Thackeray to name them. The tussle over power in Maharashtra had reached the Supreme Court earlier this week with the rebel MLAs challenging the disqualification notice sent by Deputy Speaker Narhari Zilwal. The apex court ordered that the rebel MLAs be given some “breathing time” until July 12 instead of June 27 to reply to the notice. Was this newsletter forwarded to you?
