Activist Teesta Setalvad was detained by a team of the Gujarat Anti-Terror Squad in Mumbai in connection with an FIR registered against her at the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch. The FIR named Ms. Setalvad and former police officers R.B. Sreekumar and Sanjiv Bhatt for allegedly forging documents related to 2002 Gujarat riots, and producing forged documents in various fora She was then taken to the Santacruz Police station in the city for further procedure. A Mumbai Police officer said Ms. Setalvad was picked up by the Gujarat Police from her Santacruz residence. “We provided the assistance sought by them,” he added. On June 24, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition challenging the clean chit given by the SIT to then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others in the 2002 post-Godhra riots cases. Ms. Setalvad’s NGO had supported petitioner Zakia Jafri throughout her legal battle. Ms. Jafri’s husband Ehsan Jafri was killed during the riots. Shiv Sena executive authorises Uddhav Thackeray to take action against rebels The national executive of the Shiv Sena passed a resolution authorising Maharashtra Chief Minister and party chief Uddhav Thackeray to take action against “those who have betrayed the party”, but refrained from taking immediate action against rebel leader Eknath Shinde. The executive also passed a resolution that no other political outfit or faction can use the name Shiv Sena and the name of its founder Bal Thackeray, even as the Shinde faction said it has named itself as `Shiv Sena (Balasaheb)‘. Meanwhile, Mr. Shinde alleged that the Maharashtra government has withdrawn the security cover from the residences of 38 party rebels, including himself, and their families, and dubbed the action as “political vendetta”. However, State Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil denied any such move. Further, the Maharashtra Legislature Secretariat has issued “summons” to 16 rebel Sena MLAs including Mr. Shinde, seeking written replies by the evening of June 27 to the complaints seeking their disqualification. The party’s chief whip Sunil Prabhu sent the summons to the 16 MLAs, signed by the principal secretary of the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan Rajendra Bhagwat. The summons have been issued after none of the MLAs from the rebel faction showed up at a party meeting earlier. Assam flood situation grim, Silchar submerged for sixth day The flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim with the death count rising to 118 and Silchar town in Cachar district submerged for the sixth straight day. In the past 24 hours, 10 more people lost their lives — two each from Barpeta, Dhubri, Karimganj and Udalguri districts and one death each from Cachar and Morigaon. The total population affected by the floods declined to 33.03 lakh in 28 districts as against the previous day’s figure of 45.34 lakh in 30 districts, a bulletin issued by the Assam State Management Disaster Authority said. Two drones have also been deployed in Silchar for flood inundation mapping as well as to provide relief materials to the affected people. Eight NDRF teams comprising 207 personnel from Itanagar and Bhubaneswar, along with an Army unit with 120 personnel and nine boats from Dimapur have been stationed in Silchar. Nearly 3 lakh people are under distress in Silchar with an acute shortage of food, clean drinking water and medicines, the officials said. Biden signs landmark gun measure, says ‘lives will be saved’ U.S. President Joe Biden signed the most sweeping gun violence bill in decades, a bipartisan compromise that seemed unimaginable until a recent series of mass shootings, including the massacre of 19 students and two teachers at a Texas elementary school. The legislation will toughen background checks for the youngest gun buyers, keep firearms from more domestic violence offenders and help States put in place red flag laws that make it easier for authorities to take weapons from people adjudged to be dangerous. “Lives will be saved,” he said at the White House. Citing the families of shooting victims, the President said, “Their message to us was to do something. Well today, we did.” He said, “While this bill doesn’t do everything I want, it does include actions I’ve long called for that will save lives.” The bill received the final approval in The House on Friday after it was passed in the Senate on Thursday, and Mr. Biden acted just before leaving Washington for two summits in Europe. While the bill does not include tougher restrictions that the Democrats have long championed, such as a ban on assault-type weapons and background checks for all gun transactions, it is the most impactful firearms violence measure from Congress since enacting a now-expired assault weapons ban in 1993. In Brief A gunman opened fire in Oslo’s nightlife district early Saturday, killing two people and leaving more than 20 wounded in what the Norwegian security service called an “Islamist terror act” during the capital’s annual LGBTQ Pride festival. Investigators said the suspect, identified as a 42-year-old Norwegian citizen originally from Iran, was arrested after opening fire at three locations in downtown Oslo. Police said two men, one in his 50s and and the other his 60s, died in the shootings. Ten people were treated for serious injuries, but none of them was believed to be in life-threatening condition. Eleven others had minor injuries. The Norwegian Police Security Service raised its terror alert level from “moderate” to “extraordinary” — the highest level — after the attack, which sent panicked revelers fleeing into the streets or trying to hide from the gunman.
