As per the first notification pertaining to recruitment of Agniveers issued by the Army on Monday, the process would begin in July with the first set of Agniveers joining service in June 2023. 40,000 enrollees will be recruited in two batches this year – with the first recruitment rally expected to be held in mid-August. The plan also entails conducting rallies till November, with induction into training centres to be done in two batches- a first batch of 25,000 Agniveers by the first half of December, with the remaining recruitments by the first half of February 2023 as part of the second batch. The Army has planned 83 rallies across the country. Further, the army stated, on discharge after completion of four years, Agniveers would be paid a “Seva Nidhi” package of approximately Rs 11.71 lakh. However, they will not be entitled to any pension or gratuity. The notification came in even as the country continues to grapple with anger and violent protests opposing the scheme. As many as 529 trains were cancelled on Monday with protests raging across Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab, Assam, West Bengal and Rajasthan. Delhi witnessed massive traffic blocks due to protests by opposition parties and student groups. The opposition continued to target the Centre over the scheme – Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said BJP’s intention was to create its own private army, further questioning on what the enrollees would do after four years. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, which was also at the forefront of the farmers’ protest last year, said that it was a matter of shame that the Government which rallied ex-servicemen with the promise of ‘one rank, one pension’ now launched this scheme of ‘no rank, no pension’.
