Mr. Gandhi appeared for the fourth day of questioning on Monday, a day after he turned 52, and the session would continue. Officials said he has been asked to join the probe again on Tuesday and continue recording his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). 4. Presidential poll: Gopalkrishna Gandhi refuses to contest; Opposition leaders to meet today With three of its probable presidential candidates declining to contest, leaders of Opposition parties will meet here on Tuesday afternoon to finalise a joint nominee for the July 18 election that will decide the successor to President Ram Nath Kovind. Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Monday declined the Opposition leaders’ request to contest the presidential election, days after NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah turned down similar offers. 5. SC to hear on Tuesday plea of hawkers against demolition drive at Jahangirpuri The Supreme Court Monday agreed to hear on Tuesday the plea of a hawkers’ association alleging that the shops and hawking space of street vendors have also been razed in the violence-hit Jahangirpuri area of the national capital by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). A vacation bench of Justices C T Ravikumar and Sudhanshu Dhulia took note of the submissions of senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for the association, that the plea needed an urgent hearing along with other pending petitions on the issue. 6. Copper plant sale offer ‘diversionary,’ says anti-Sterlite group in TN Vedanta offering for sale its Sterlite copper smelting plant is a ‘diversionary and deceptive tactic’ and the mining company should surrender its landholding to the government, a noted leader of the anti-Sterlite movement said here on Monday. The conglomerate must in the first place withdraw its appeal challenging the Madras High Court’s refusal to direct re-opening of the copper plant, M Krishnamoorthy of the Anti-Sterlite (Thoothukudi District) People’s Federation said. 7. ED issues fresh summons to Maharashtra minister Parab for questioning in money laundering case The ED has issued a fresh summons to Maharashtra minister and Shiv Sena leader Anil Parab for questioning in Mumbai on June 21 in a money laundering probe linked to alleged violation of coastal regulation zone provisions in the construction of a resort in the Dapoli beach area of Ratnagiri district, officials said on Monday. He was earlier summoned on June 15 but skipped the deposition citing official work. He has now been asked to depose before the agency at its zonal office in Mumbai on Tuesday. 8. FIH Pro League: Indian women’s team looks to address grey areas against USA ahead of World Cup With the World Cup just over 10 days away, the Indian women’s hockey team would look to utilise its last FIH Pro League double-header tie against lowly USA, starting on Tuesday, to address its weak areas ahead of the marquee event to be co-hosted by the Netherlands and Spain. The Indian women produced a remarkable performance in their debut FIH Pro League season, occupying the third spot in the standings with 24 points from 14 games behind Netherlands (32 points from 14 matches) and Argentina, who have already clinched the title with 42 points from 16 games. 9. Three service chiefs likely to call on PM Modi on Tuesday The three service chiefs are likely to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi separately on Tuesday to brief him about the Agnipath scheme as well as their plan for its implementation. The meetings are being planned amid widespread protests in several states against the new military recruitment scheme. It is learnt that the chiefs would apprise the prime minister about various aspects of implementation of the scheme.
