The Punjab Police on Monday questioned some individuals in connection with the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, saying afterwards that they had collected vital leads. In a shocking incident on Sunday, Moosewala, who had contested Punjab’s recent Assembly elections on the Congress ticket, was shot dead at Jahawarke village in Mansa district a day after his security cover was trimmed. According to the Punjab Police, gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang “has claimed responsibility for the killing through its Canada-based operative”. Sources in Delhi Police’s special cell told The Hindu that jailed gangster Bishnoi and his associates were being interrogated as they were said to have hatched the plan from inside Tihar jail. A senior police official said that Bishnoi was in contact with several of his associates from inside the jail, and it was these associates who are said to have planned the murder. The Police official said that Bishnoi’s gangsters had been in touch with Canada-based Gangster Goldy Brar, who would also call them from Canada. The Police are believed to be currently tracing Brar’s exact location. The report on the investigation into the singer’s death just a day after his security cover was withdrawn appears on the front page of The Hindu as the incident has put Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s nascent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab under the political scanner over the law and order situation in the State. Opposition parties Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and the BJP have launched an offensive against AAP, with the Akalis demanding that a police case be registered against Mr. Mann for releasing confidential information about the withdrawal of the security cover of the singer as well as other prominent personalities on AAP’s digital portal. Representatives of the former Congress administration, meanwhile, demanded the dismissal of the AAP government, citing a sense of fear that had been created across the State after the killing.
