Sri Lanka’s Defence Ministry orders tri-forces to open fire on rioters Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence on Tuesday ordered the Army, the Air Force and the Navy personnel to open fire on anyone looting public property or causing harm to others amidst violent protests in the island nation over the unprecedented economic crisis. The order came after embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa urged people to stop “violence and acts of revenge” against fellow citizens and vowed to address the political and economic crisis facing the nation. 2. Delhi HC to pronounce verdict on pleas to criminalise marital rape The Delhi High Court is scheduled to pronounce its verdict on a batch of pleas seeking the criminalisation of marital rape today. A bench of Justices Rajiv Shakdher and C. Hari Shankar had reserved its judgement on February 21 on the petitions seeking to strike down the exception granted to husbands under the Indian rape law after conducting marathon hearings on the issue. 3. Sedition | SC wants reply today The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought the Centre’s stand on keeping the pending sedition cases in abeyance to protect the interests of citizens already booked and not registering fresh cases till the government’s re-examination of the colonial-era penal law is over. It wanted a response today. Asking the Centre to take a clear stand after it posed the two specific queries, the top court agreed that a re-look of Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) be left to the government, a day after it had filed an affidavit deciding to reconsider the contentious provision. 4. ‘Asani’ moving in a ‘cone of uncertainty’ over the Bay of Bengal The cyclonic storm Asani is currently moving in a “cone of uncertainty” over west-central Bay of Bengal and is expected to cross the coast anywhere between Kakinada and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh by evening. 5.
