United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in its first statement since the beginning of Russia’s invasion, expressed “deep concerns” over the “maintenance of peace and security” in Ukraine. Further, it backed efforts by Secretary General Antonio Guterres to find a peaceful solution. The Security Council’s previous statement on May 5 had said the war on Ukraine is “senseless in its scope, ruthless in its dimensions and limitless in its potential for global harm”. However, Friday’s statement does not use terms as ‘war’ or ‘conflict’ to describe the tensions, only recalling that “all member states have undertaken, under the Charter of the United Nations, the obligation to settle their international disputes by peaceful means.” Mr Guterres had met Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on April 26 and 28 respectively. The Secretary General had remarked on Thursday that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a violation of territorial integrity and of the Charter of the United Nations. He added that the war must end for the sake of the people of Ukraine, Russia and the entire world. Mr Guterres on Friday held that the world must come together to silence the guns and uphold the values of the U.N. Charter. He mentioned about the ongoing humanitarian efforts requiring enormous coordination and advocacy with the Russian Federation and Ukrainian authorities. “It is good to know that even in these times of hyper-communications, silent diplomacy is still possible and is sometimes the only effective way to produce results,” his statement read. Separately, speaking at a Security Council event hosted by Russia, India stressed on the path of diplomacy and dialogue for peace in Ukraine. Was this newsletter forwarded to you?
