Russia will achieve its goal of ensuring Ukraineâs neutral status and will prefer to do that through talks, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday, on the third week of Russiaâs invasion of the sovereign country. Her comments are significant as they come a day after Ukraineâs President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country was no longer insisting on joining NATO and that he was open for a compromise on the Donetsk and Luhansk breakaway republics that were recognised as independent by Russia. Moscowâs aims do not include overthrowing the Kyiv government and it hopes to achieve more significant progress in the next round of talks with Ukraine, Ms. Zakharova told a briefing, adding that Russiaâs military operations were going strictly according to plan. The Russian Foreign Ministry also said âsome progress has been madeâ in talks with Ukraine. Ukraine and Russia officials have been meeting on the Belarus-Poland border for talks to end fighting. Ms. Zakharova said another round of talks would be focused on humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians. The Armyâs aim is ânot to occupy Ukraine, or the destruction of its statehood, or the overthrow of the government. It is not directed against the civilian population,â Ms. Zakharova said. As an editorial in the newspaper has pointed out, the question is whether Mr. Putin would accept this and be ready for de-escalation. The most stringent sanctions on Russia seen in recent times have taken a toll on the Russian economy. More than two million people have fled Ukraine following the invasion, and have become refugees. The Hindu has led with the report for the hope the statements carry. If Russia is serious about peace, this is the moment for the start of a serious dialogue on Mr. Zelenskyâs proposals.
